Act I | The Beginning
In 1891, Alexander Fraser, a distinguished local lawyer and magistrate, constructed the original house on a magnificent site overlooking the Niagara River and Gorge. Built on solid bedrock with the finest materials, this home exemplifies the Queen Anne Revival style, featuring an asymmetrical design, large windows, turrets, towers, wrap-around porches, intricate lines, and multi-gabled roofs.
Fraser's Grandview residence stood as a testament to Victorian elegance and architectural excellence. He lived in this splendid home until his death in 1942, leaving behind a legacy of grandeur and historical significance that continues to captivate visitors to this day.
Act II | The Gracie Family
Following Alexander Fraser's death, the Gracie family acquired the home, dedicating themselves to preserving its Victorian grandeur. For over 20 years, they cherished living in this stunning Eastlake Victorian residence, meticulously maintaining its historical charm and elegance.
In 1961, the Gracie family passed the torch to Elvira and Peter Van Kleef, who saw the property's potential and transformed it into the "Eastwood Tourist Lodge" Bed & Breakfast, continuing its legacy of hospitality and grace.
Act III | The Oldest B&B Launches in Niagara
When Elvira and Peter Van Kleef purchased the property in 1961, they envisioned its potential and established the charming "Eastwood Tourist Lodge" Bed & Breakfast. By 1965, the Niagara Region had blossomed into a vibrant tourist destination, famously known as the "Honeymoon Capital" of the world. The Eastwood Tourist Lodge quickly became a featured stop for visitors seeking romance and relaxation.
The Niagara Region also became renowned for hosting popular events like the Grape and Wine Festival, celebrated since 1951, and the Shaw Festival, which began in 1962. These attractions, along with the allure of Niagara Falls, made the Eastwood Tourist Lodge a beloved retreat for tourists from around the globe.
Act IV | Rooms to Grow!
The mid-1970s marked a significant period for the Niagara Region, witnessing the establishment of the Inniskillin winery and the pioneering efforts of Donald Ziraldo and Karl Kaiser to promote Niagara's wine industry on a global scale. Their dedication played a crucial role in elevating the region's reputation for producing world-class wines.
In 1973, the Niagara Escarpment Planning and Development Act was passed, safeguarding the Niagara Escarpment from industrial development and preserving its natural beauty. This legislation ensured the continued protection of the area's stunning landscapes for future generations.
The success of the Eastwood Tourist Lodge during this vibrant era led to an expansion, adding six more rooms to accommodate the growing number of visitors drawn to the region's charm and attractions. This expansion solidified the lodge's reputation as a premier destination for travelers seeking comfort and elegance.
Act V | Passing the Torch
In the early 1990s, Elvira and Peter Van Kleef retired, entrusting the Eastwood Tourist Lodge to their son and daughter-in-law. As the new stewards of the business, they witnessed the growing popularity of local wineries and the increasing interest in Niagara's parks, trails, and ecosystems. This period marked the rise of "Agritourism," a trend that highlighted the appeal of nature-based tourism in Canada.
The shift towards Agritourism reflected a broader movement where visitors sought authentic, nature-focused experiences. The lodge, nestled in the heart of this flourishing region, continued to thrive, attracting guests eager to explore the scenic beauty and vibrant agricultural heritage of the Niagara area.
Act VI | I Saw - I Renovated - I Conquered
Gerry and Joanne Van Kleef continued the family tradition of operating the Eastwood Tourist Lodge until their passing in 2010 and 2011. Unfortunately, the B&B fell into disrepair and was closed between 2009 and 2014.
Despite this setback, the flourishing tourism industry in Niagara Falls caught the attention of John and Isabella Pinter, who recognized the property's potential.
Act VII | B&B and Beyond

In the spring of 2014, they began extensive renovations to restore the Grandview Hotel to its original magnificence, breathing new life into this historic gem. Act VIII | Love at First Sight
In 2019, entrepreneur Richard Xue was captivated by the historic Grandview property and embarked on a determined two-year mission to acquire it. Despite the pandemic delaying renovations, Richard successfully became the owner of Grandview in 2020. Committed to honouring the property's heritage, he sourced antiques and décor from around the world to offer guests a luxurious and historically rich experience.
Under Richard's stewardship, Grandview was meticulously restored to its former glory, seamlessly blending its storied past with modern comforts. His vision ensured that every guest would enjoy an immersive stay, surrounded by the elegance and charm of a bygone era.
